The Rookery at Cathedral Pines

If you ever get the chance to travel through northeastern Wisconsin, check out Cathedral Pines State Natural Area in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. It's an old-growth conifer stand that we mention here because it supports a rookery of nearly 200 Great Blue Herons and their young, who nest there each summer.

Situated near Archibald Lake, the Cathedral Woods, as the area is also known, were never logged. That's thanks to Lucy Ramsey Holt, the wife of a nineteenth-century lumber baron who took her children there for Bible study.

Because the grove felt so sacred to her, she made her husband promise to spare the amazing hemlocks, birches and pines. Thankfully, he agreed and kept his promise.
