As the legend goes, the 12 animals of the Chinese Zodiac held a contest to see who could cross a river the fastest. The winner was to head the cycle of years.

Turns out the lazy rat hopped onto the ox's back when the race began, where he enjoyed a free ride for most of the contest. Then, just as the ox was about to emerge the winner, the rat jumped off his back and dashed ahead to steal the victory. The pig, being very slow, was the last to finish.
