All puns aside, the making of a basketball is an fascinating process. It starts with creating a bladder of vulcanized rubber that's then punched with a hole for inflation.

Once it's determined that a bladder actually holds air, it's encased by a "carcass," a covering of wound nylon or polyester threads that helps shape the ball into a perfect sphere.

Lastly, the rubber cover is cut to size and silk screened, imprinting the outlines of the six panels that make up the ball.
