Game Night with Gramps

Saturday nights were a big deal when I was growing up. That's when I'd go over to my grandparents for game night. My grandfather and I had a pretty good rivalry going on for a few years.

We'd never play the goofy games with colored die and fake money. Grandpa taught me to play real board games - the kinds that have stood the test of time.

There would be Chinese Checkers showdowns, Backgammon battles, and we'd try to dominate each other in Dominoes. But our all-time favorite was always a good game of Chess.

Gramps refused to go easy on me even when I begged him to let me win just one game. "It's the only way you're gonna learn to be a better player," he'd tell me.

It was worth it. I'll never forget the first time I shouted "Check mate!" and knocked his king over on the board.
