Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt was on a bear hunting trip with the governor of Mississippi in 1902 - but he wasn't having much luck. Everyone in the party except him had bagged a bear.

Some of the other hunters tied an injured bear to a tree and suggested Roosevelt shoot and claim it. But the president refused. That act of compassion became the inspiration for a political cartoon, which caught the eye of a candy shop owner and toymaker named Morris Michtom.

He started making stuffed bears named Teddy, and after sending one to President Roosevelt - got permission to keep doing so. The rest is history!
