A growing number of equestrian athletes are now advocating for the wear of protective headgear -- even in dressage. Although it may seem like a relatively tame event, a series of high-profile accidents have generated greater awareness as to its hazards, including a 2010 incident that left Olympian Courtney King Dye brain injured and unable to speak or use her right side for a time.

Now the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) is studying whether to make wearing a helmet mandatory for dressage; this is one case where we hope good old fashioned horse sense will win out over convention!
