For example, Legal Attaché R.G. Leddy stated in an October 8, 1942, letter to the FBI director,

"Consequently, early in September 1942, ERNEST HEMINGWAY began to engage directly in intelligence activities on behalf of the American Embassy in Havana. ...the Ambassador has noted on several memoranda that he likes HEMINGWAY'S approach, and wishes to encourage him in the type of work that he is doing. HEMINGWAY himself told me that he declined an offer from Hollywood to write a script for a "March of Time" report on the "Flying Tigers" in Burma, for which the compensation was to be $150,000, because he considers the work he is now engaged in as of greater importance."
