In the 1800s, westward expansion across the United States decimated the populations of large mammals that formerly sustained gray wolves.

With so many of their wild food sources eradicated, gray wolves turned to livestock for sustenance, which proved fatal for them. In fact, bounty hunters continued to track and kill wolves as late as the 1960s due to the frequency of attacks on domesticated animals.

By 1973, when they came under the protection of the Endangered Species Act, there were only a few hundred gray wolves left in northern Minnesota.

Fortunately, the recovery programs that were begun over 30 years ago are working, and restoration of gray wolf habitats and prey species are enabling a gradual revival of the species.
