Flamingos will forever be associated with pink plastic lawn ornaments thanks to a man named Don Featherstone (no bird pun intended).

Featherstone went to art school, but found himself creating three-dimensional plastic animals for a company called Union Products. One day, after looking at pictures in a National Geographic magazine, he decided to make a flamingo. Featherstone crafted more than 750 plastic creatures in his career, but none became pop-culture icons like his pink flamingos.

They grew into such a huge fad that Don Featherstone started adding his signature to the figures in order to distinguish them from copycats. The success of his creations helped Featherstone become president of Union Products, in 1996.

The lawn ornaments may be a little on the tacky side, but these Pink Flamingo Personal checks are far from kitschy! They feature fantastic original wildlife photography just like the shots that inspired Featherstone.
