On sun-drenched tropical islands, men and women alike often don a utilitarian piece of beachwear known as a "sarong," a lightweight wrap that can be tied at your waist or shoulder. It's a quick-drying cover-up that's designed to protect your skin (and your modesty!) once you come out of the water.

Many sarongs are dyed through the labor-intensive process known as batik, in which wax is spread on the not-to-be-dyed areas of the design. The purpose of the wax is to block the fibers so they'll resist colorants. The fabric then needs a dip in boiling water to dissolve the wax. The process is then repeated for every color in the design.
