A Somber Ceremony

One of the most fascinating facts about crows is that they hold funeral ceremonies to mourn the passing of their own.

The members of a murder -- that's what a group of crows is called -- will assemble while screaming out an urgent cacophony of caws. The corvids alight, jockey for position on the ground, and fall reverently silent for 20 minutes or so. Afterwards, a solitary "caw" signals the end of the service and the birds fly away in rapid succession.
