Doing the Twist

The high school dance was and still is a momentous occasion for teenagers in America.

Back in the 1950s, school dances were called sock hops because students were told to take off their shoes to protect the hardwood floor in the gymnasium.

It was most likely the absence of shoes that led to teens doing the Twist while sliding around on their stocking feet. The Twist eventually inspired other dance crazes like the Mashed Potato, the Monkey and even the Funky Chicken!
