Hooray for the Red White and Blue!

John Philip Sousa - the most famous marching band composer of all time - came up with the song Stars and Stripes Forever on Christmas Day 1896.

Sousa was on a ferry in Europe when he wrote the patriotic tune in his head. We can only assume he must have been thinking of the home of the free and the brave at the time.

As soon as the composer got back on U.S. soil, he wrote his song down. And although only one recording exists of Sousa's band playing the song, it's become a patriotic standard that has been performed countless times.
