It took quite some time for the modern zipper to be accepted by society.

The earliest version was created by the same man who invented the sewing machine, another was introduced at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893, but it still didn't take off. In the beginning the fastener was mostly used on footwear and tobacco pouches.

It wasn't until the so-called "Battle of the Fly" in 1937 that French fashion designers gave the zipper it's most famous job, and it took over for buttons on the front of men's pants. Now the zipper is considered one of the most influential inventions of all time.
